I remember back when I was a kid, IKEA had the coolest furniture around.
*NOSTALGY KICKING IN, SCROLL DOWN TO GO DIRECTLY TO THE ALTERNATIVES*
The Scandinavian minimalist feeling, the whole labyrinth experience, trying all sofas and mattresses with shoes on, the quirky names of furniture, the smell of the hot dogs and kottbullard meatballs..! I could spend a full weekend living in Ikea… And of course, I urged my parents to buy a full IKEA teenager room for me.
Once I grew up and needed to move out of my parent's house, well, start decorating my own nest, I was already tired of seeing the same furniture everywhere. It seemed like no matter where I went I saw a lack table and a billy shelf. So I struggled A LOT to find a unique alternative to IKEA at affordable prices.
To be honest, if e-shopping had been a big hit back then, and if Coavas had existed, I’d probably have bought all the basics from here. I truly believe it is a great alternative not to fall into the billy- lack loop.
I’d like to suggest you some of my fave alternatives for your new home’s basics.
Let’s assume we all start from the scratchiest shared dorm or single bedroom apartment.
Hence, priority #1 should be space saving. Let’s start by listing down all the basics to kick start our new home:
- a bed (or mattress) to sleep on
- a dining table
- some chairs to sit down at it
- a bookcase or storage unit
- a coffee table (and a sofa to create a cozy cocooning living room)
